10 Tips to Create an Eco-friendlier Trade Show

Doing your part to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

There has been quite a bit of chatter on how the pandemic has made us all slow down and be a bit greener. Less travel, only purchasing what we absolutely need, and taking advantage of the great outdoors (while still social distancing). To celebrate Earth Day, we thought we would share some thoughts as to what we can do as an industry to create events that are more sustainable and better for the Earth, and as elementary as it sounds, we can all do our part to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

We are lucky to live in a world that is full of alternative options that can be more sustainable from the environment. Here are just a few examples of what you can do to reduce the amount of waste your show produces:

  • Instead of selecting plastic badge holders, consider the paper print outs, these will be more economical

  • Promote attendees to use an online version of a floor plan to navigate and an online agenda planning tool to reduce the amount of paper your attendees may use to plan in advance

  • Consider offering a mobile app as an extension of your event to navigate and reduce the amount of printed products you offer

  • Place water bottle fill up stations throughout the hall to reduce the number of plastic bottles thrown away, and of course offer sponsorship opportunities to give away re-usable bottles

  • Select convention centers that have options to run at lowered energy levels

  • Ask your food vendors if they have a biodegradable option for plates and napkins

  • Work with display vendors that use recycled materials to create booth spaces and signage

  • Place recycle bins throughout the show floor, especially during move in/move out

  • Offer environmentally-friendly transport for your attendees to help reduce greenhouse emissions

  • Do not put dates on the SWAG you give away at attendee registration so you can use it at your next event

The options are endless when it comes to creating a more sustainable event. We can all do our part and find creative ways to protect our Earth! How will you reduce your carbon footprint?
